Build muscle

Look strong. Feel strong. Be strong.

For everyday men and women who want a leaner, more muscular body, without living in the gym or looking like a bodybuilder.

The problem

Why is building muscle so hard?

On paper it's simple. In real life, it's easy to get wrong.

Most people make good progress in their first few months. Then it stops. The same weights, the same body, and months or even years of effort with little to show for it.

When I look at why, it nearly always comes down to the same three things.

Where it goes wrong

The 3 things holding you back

1

Training

Not training hard enough, smart enough or often enough. Without a plan that steadily adds weight, reps or sets, your body has no reason to grow.

2

Nutrition

Not eating to support your training. Too little protein, the wrong amount of food overall, or poor-quality choices mean you can't build much, however hard you train.

3

Lifestyle

Poor sleep, high stress and not enough recovery. Muscle is built when you rest, not just when you lift.

Myths

Muscle-building myths

There's no magic to building muscle. It's a process, and anyone can do it. But a lot of bad advice gets in the way. Tap each one to see the truth.

"It's my genetics. I just can't build muscle."

Genetics affect how fast you progress, not whether you can. Almost everyone can build a noticeable amount of muscle with the right training, food and consistency.

"I need expensive supplements."

No. Real food, enough protein, good sleep and a solid plan do the heavy lifting. A few basics can help, but they're the last 5%, not the first.

"I have to bulk up first, then cut."

Not usually. Most people, especially beginners or anyone carrying extra body fat, can build muscle and lose fat at the same time with the right approach.

"Lifting weights will make me bulky."

Getting "bulky" takes years of very focused training and eating. For most people, lifting weights creates a leaner, firmer, more toned shape.

"More is better. I should train every day."

Muscle grows during recovery. Well-planned sessions a few times a week, done properly, beat daily sessions that leave you run down.

Common questions

Building muscle: your questions answered

How long until I see results?

Most people feel stronger within a few weeks. Visible changes in shape usually show within two to three months of consistent training and eating well, and keep building from there.

Can I build muscle and lose fat at the same time?

Yes, especially if you're new to training, returning after a break, or carrying extra body fat. The right balance of training, protein and calories lets you do both.

How often do I need to train?

Less than you might think. A well-designed plan a few times a week works for most people. I'll build it around the time you actually have.

I'm a beginner, or over 40. Can I still build muscle?

Absolutely. You can build muscle at any age, and it becomes more important as you get older for strength, joints, metabolism and staying independent. We start where you are and build up safely.

Will I get too bulky?

No. We train for the look and strength you want. Most clients want to look leaner, more athletic and more toned, and that's exactly what this approach delivers.

Do I need to take supplements?

No. Food comes first. If a basic supplement would genuinely help you, I'll tell you. You'll never be pushed to buy anything.

Do you coach online or in person?

Both. I coach in person at The Gym Group in Handforth, and online through my coaching app with regular check-ins, wherever you are.
